Operating System: macOS 10.12 Sierra

I have an HP 4100e All-In-One that is "very low" on black ink. When trying to print from my desktop, the page runs through and there are some printing sounds, but the page comes out blank. However, whenever I use the command buttons on the printer itself to print out a "Printer Information Page" it prints just fine. I have a new black cartridge ready to go, but with the cost of these things I hesitate to install it just now IF there's another solution. Any thoughts, or hopefully fixes, as to why it works fine at the printer but not when initiated from the desktop?
