Hi @becs81

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

It’s frustrating when your printer doesn’t recognize genuine HP cartridges.

Let’s work through some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue with your HP OfficeJet 5745:

1. Verify the Ink Cartridges

Ensure Compatibility: Double-check that the cartridges are specifically designed for the HP OfficeJet 5745. Even genuine HP cartridges can vary by printer model.

Remove Protective Tape: Make sure any orange protective tape or plastic on the cartridge has been fully removed.

2. Reinsert the Cartridges

Turn off your printer and unplug it.

Open the cartridge access door and remove the cartridges.

Check for any visible damage on the cartridges or debris in the cartridge slots.

Reinsert the cartridges firmly into their designated slots until you hear a click.

Close the access door, plug the printer back in, and power it on.

3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

Dust or ink residue might prevent proper recognition:

Turn off the printer and unplug it.

Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridges and inside the printer.

Let everything dry completely before reinserting the cartridges.

4. Update Printer Firmware

HP regularly releases new firmware versions for printer enhancements, app updates, or issue fixes. Update the firmware regularly to get the most out of your printer.

Click on the link below for instructions on how to update the firmware of your printer.

5. Reset the Printer

A printer reset can sometimes clear recognition errors:

With the printer powered on, unplug it from the power source.

Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and power it on.

Check if the cartridges are now recognized.

6. Perform an Alignment

If the printer still recognizes the cartridges incorrectly, attempt to align them:

Navigate to Printer Settings > Tools > Align Printer using the printer’s control panel or the HP Smart app.

Follow the prompts to complete the alignment process.

If this solution hits the spot, please come back and click "Accepted Solution" to help others find the answer. And if you'd like to say thanks, select "Yes" on the bottom left of the public post, as that would make our day!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
