Hi @Bbrown0921,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're encountering the "There is a problem with the printer or ink system" error on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8620, even after reinstalling the old cartridges, here’s a step-by-step guide to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

**1. Check for Ink Cartridge Issues

  • Reinstall Cartridges: Remove the ink cartridges from the printer and reinstall them, ensuring they click into place securely. Make sure they are installed in the correct slots.
  • Check for Protective Tape: Ensure that any protective tape or plastic has been removed from the new cartridges.

**2. Inspect the Ink Cartridges and Slots

  • Check for Damage: Examine the ink cartridges and the cartridge slots for any visible damage or debris.
  • Clean Contacts: Gently clean the copper-colored contact points on the cartridges and the printer with a lint-free cloth. Be careful not to touch the nozzles.

**3. Reset the Printer

  • Power Cycle:
    • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
    • Wait for about 60 seconds.
    • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
  • Reset Printer Settings:
    • If the error persists, perform a factory reset on the printer to restore default settings. Refer to the printer’s manual for instructions on how to perform a reset.

**4. Update or Reinstall Printer Firmware

  • Check for Updates:
    • Go to the HP Support website and check if there is a firmware update available for your printer. Follow the instructions to update the firmware.
  • Reinstall Firmware:
    • Sometimes reinstalling or updating the firmware can resolve issues related to the ink system.

**5. Perform a Printer Diagnostic

  • HP Print and Scan Doctor:
    • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from the HP website. This tool can diagnose and fix many printer issues, including those related to the ink system.

**6. Check for Internal Blockages or Mechanical Issues

  • Inspect for Obstructions:
    • Open the printer’s access door and check for any paper jams or obstructions that could be interfering with the ink system.
  • Check for Mechanism Issues:
    • Listen for unusual sounds when the printer is operating, which could indicate a mechanical problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
