I have a HP Office Jet 8720.  I always print with "Black Ink Only" but yet my color cartridges get depleted.   How can I only use my Black Ink cartridge?

I understand your HP OfficeJet 8720 is depleting color cartridges despite selecting "Black Ink Only" mode, there could be a few reasons for this behavior:
 

Printer Settings Issue:

  • Ensure that when you select "Black Ink Only" from the print settings, it applies to all print jobs. Sometimes, print jobs from certain applications or settings might override this preference.
  • Double-check the settings both on your computer (in the print dialog box before printing) and on the printer's control panel to ensure "Black Ink Only" is consistently selected.

Software or Driver Issue:

  • Make sure your printer drivers and software are up to date. Sometimes outdated software can cause unexpected behavior with ink usage.
  • Consider reinstalling the printer drivers and software to reset any configuration issues that might be causing the printer to use color ink unnecessarily.

Printer Firmware Update: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Firmware updates can sometimes address ink usage issues and improve overall performance.

Printer Calibration:

  • Run a printer calibration or maintenance cycle from the printer's control panel. This can sometimes resolve ink usage discrepancies by ensuring the printer is correctly interpreting the print job settings.

Ink Cartridge Compatibility:

  • Ensure that the black ink cartridge you are using is compatible with your printer model. Using an incorrect or incompatible cartridge could cause the printer to default to using other cartridges.
