"Printer failure" - There is a problem with the printer or ink system.
I tried turning it off/on. I tried disconnecting power cord while printer was on, waiting 60 seconds, then plugging back in. Will replacing the ink cartridges definitely resolve this error? (They're expensive!) I'm confused why it says "printer or ink" rather than one or the other. What other problems generate this specific error message?

Hi @JenAR,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
The error message you're encountering, "Printer failure - There is a problem with the printer or ink system," can be caused by various issues related to either the printer itself or the ink system. While replacing the ink cartridges might resolve the issue, it's not a guaranteed fix.
Here are some other potential causes for this error message.
- Print Head Issues: The print head, which is responsible for transferring ink onto the paper, might be clogged or damaged. This could prevent the printer from properly functioning and trigger the error message.
- Printer Firmware: Sometimes, issues with the printer's firmware can cause this error message to appear. Updating the printer's firmware to the latest version might resolve the problem.
- Ink Cartridge Compatibility: If you've recently replaced the ink cartridges, make sure they are compatible with your printer model. Using incompatible or third-party cartridges can sometimes lead to errors.
- Hardware Malfunction: There could be a hardware malfunction within the printer, such as a faulty sensor or internal component.
- Software Glitch: Occasionally, software glitches or conflicts can cause the printer to display error messages. Resetting the printer to its factory settings or reinstalling the printer drivers might help resolve the issue.
Before investing in new ink cartridges, you might want to try troubleshooting these potential causes.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
