@bobb1945, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Magenta Cartridge Issue on HP Officejet Pro 8600!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It seems like your HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer is encountering issues with recognizing the new magenta cartridge and consistently showing a "cartridge damaged" error. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Solution 1: Verify Cartridge Authenticity

  1. Use Genuine HP Cartridges: Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges, as non-HP or refilled cartridges can sometimes cause recognition issues. Visit the HP anti-counterfeit webpage to verify the authenticity of your HP cartridges.

Solution 2: Check for Packaging Materials

  1. Remove Protective Tapes: Double-check that all protective tapes and materials have been removed from the new cartridge. Sometimes, overlooked packaging elements can prevent the cartridge from functioning properly.

Solution 3: Inspect and Clean Contacts

  1. Turn Off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer.
  2. Open Cartridge Access Door: Slip your fingers into the slot on the left side of the printer, pull forward to open the cartridge access door, and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  3. Remove and Inspect the Cartridge: Remove the magenta cartridge and inspect the copper-colored electrical contacts. Ensure there are no obstructions or debris.
  4. Clean the Electrical Contacts: Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts in the printer. Allow them to dry completely.

Solution 4: Restart Printer

  1. Remove All Cartridges: Remove all cartridges from the printer.
  2. Turn Off the Printer: Press the power button to turn off the printer and wait for it to power down completely.
  3. Unplug the Printer: Disconnect the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  4. Wait 60 Seconds: Leave the printer unplugged for at least 60 seconds.
  5. Reconnect and Restart Printer: Reconnect the power cord and turn the printer back on. Wait for it to complete the startup routine and reinsert the cartridges one by one, starting with magenta.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
