Hi @3joanned,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Smart Tank Plus 551 series printer is only printing in magenta even though all ink tanks are full, this usually points to a printhead issue, clogged nozzles, or a software/driver problem. Here’s how you can fix it step-by-step:

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting

  1. Check Ink Levels and Ink Flow
    • Ensure that all ink tanks (cyan, yellow, black) are filled to the correct levels.
    • Inspect the ink tubes for air bubbles, which can disrupt ink flow. If you notice bubbles, gently tap the tubes or run a cleaning cycle to remove them.

  2. Run Printhead Cleaning Cycles
    • Access your printer's maintenance settings and perform a printhead cleaning.
    • If the issue persists, repeat the cleaning cycle up to three times, allowing a few minutes between each cycle.
    • After each cleaning, print a test page to check for improvements.

  3. Manual Printhead Cleaning
    • If automated cleaning doesn't help, manually clean the printhead:
      • Turn off the printer and unplug it.
      • Open the printer to access the printhead.
      • Use a lint-free cloth dampened with distilled water to gently wipe the printhead nozzles.
      • Allow the printhead to dry completely before reinstalling.

  4. Update Printer Firmware
    • Outdated firmware can cause printing issues.
    • Visit the HP Support website to download and install the latest firmware for your printer model.

  5. Reset the Printer
    • Sometimes, a simple reset can resolve glitches:
      • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
      • Wait for about 60 seconds.
      • Plug the printer back in and turn it on.

I hope this helps.
