Hi @Cathy-Locke1_7 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're experiencing smudged printing with a new cartridge on your HP Officejet Pro 8630, there are several potential causes and solutions you can explore:

Check Paper Quality:

  • Ensure that you are using the correct type and quality of paper recommended for your printer. Low-quality or incompatible paper can lead to smudging.

Inspect the Print Heads:

  • Check the print heads for any clogs or dried ink. Many printers, including the HP Officejet Pro 8630, have a cleaning utility that can be accessed through the printer software or control panel. Run a print head cleaning cycle to clear any blockages.

Print Head Alignment:

  • Make sure that the print heads are properly aligned. Most printers have an alignment tool in the software or on the control panel. Follow the instructions to align the print heads.

Check for Ink Leaks:

  • Examine the printer for any signs of ink leaks. If you find any, clean the affected areas carefully, and consider seeking professional assistance if the problem persists.

Update Printer Drivers:

  • Ensure that you have the latest printer drivers installed. Outdated drivers may cause printing issues. Visit the HP website to download and install the latest drivers for your printer model.

Adjust Print Settings:

  • Check the print settings in the software you're using to ensure that they match the paper type and print quality you are using. Adjusting the settings to match the paper and quality may help reduce smudging.

Temperature and Humidity:

  • Extreme temperature and humidity levels can affect the performance of your printer. Make sure the printer is in an environment within the recommended operating conditions.

Clean the Printer:

  • Dust and debris inside the printer can impact print quality. Carefully clean the interior of the printer using a soft, lint-free cloth.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
