What exactly is the error message on the printer?  Is the black cartridge an HP or a third-party? 

 

If the cartridge is a third-party one that had previously been printed til the ink was low, then the cartridge status would have been marked as empty.  I do not know of a way to reset this, you would need to contact your supplier.
