Hi @lrs808

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating this must be—especially when the HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw refill switch refuses to turn. Let's go through some troubleshooting steps to resolve this issue.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for Refill Switch Not Turning

1. Ensure Proper Refill Cartridge Alignment

  • Make sure the HP refill bottle is correctly positioned.
  • The nozzle should be fully inserted into the refill port.
  • If the bottle isn’t aligned properly, the switch may not unlock.

2. Check for Residual Ink Blockage

  • Sometimes dried toner or ink residue can prevent the switch from turning.
  • Use a lint-free cloth to gently wipe around the refill port.
  • If possible, use compressed air to clear any debris.

3. Apply Gentle Pressure to the Switch

  • Try pressing down slightly on the switch while turning.
  • Avoid excessive force, as this could damage the mechanism.

4. Perform a Printer Reset

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • This can help clear any internal errors affecting the refill mechanism.

Let me know if you need further clarification! I know how frustrating printer refill issues can be, but hopefully, this gets your HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw back to working properly. 😊

Hawks_Eye,

Thanks for the response and apologies in the delay in reply but had to wait for the weekend to try.  I tried doing the steps you mentioned and even opened a second toner refill with no success.  Are the refills one try?  Once I try loading it locks?  any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks and have a great weekend.

Best regards,

It sounds like the HP LaserJet Tank 2504dw refill switch is stuck, even after trying a second toner refill. Here are a few additional steps to troubleshoot:

Additional Troubleshooting Steps

1. Confirm Refill Lock Mechanism

  • Some HP toner refill systems lock after an unsuccessful attempt.
  • If the refill bottle was inserted incorrectly, the mechanism may have engaged prematurely.
  • Try gently wiggling the bottle while turning the switch.

2. Check HP’s Official Troubleshooting Guide

3. Inspect for Mechanical Blockage

  • If the switch won’t turn, there may be toner residue or plastic misalignment.
  • Use compressed air or a soft brush to clean around the refill port.

If none of these steps work, reaching out to HP Customer Support or a local repair center may be the best option.

Let me know if you need further assistance! Hopefully, we can get your printer back to working properly.
