Printer is not recognizing black ink cartridge, HP genuine brand 664XL.

I am wondering if this is the correct cartridge for:

HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 3635 All-in-One Printer.

Or is there another reason for it not being recognized.

Hi @PCCARE ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with the HP DeskJet Ink Advantage 3635 All-in-One Printer uses the HP 664 or HP 664XL ink cartridges for both black and tri-color. So, the HP 664XL black cartridge you are using is indeed the correct cartridge for your printer.

If the printer is not recognize the black ink cartridge despite it being genuine, here are some potential reasons and troubleshooting steps:

1. Cartridge Installation Issues:

  • Make sure the cartridge is inserted correctly. Remove it, inspect for any protective plastic tape still on the contacts, and then firmly reinsert it.
  • Ensure the cartridge is properly aligned with the designated slot.

2. Cartridge Contacts:

  • Clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water to remove any dirt or residue.

3. Firmware Update: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Check if your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes printers may need an update to recognize newer batches of ink cartridges.

4. Cartridge Defect:

  • Even genuine cartridges can sometimes be faulty. Try replacing the cartridge with another HP 664XL or 664 if available to see if the issue persists.

5. Printer Reset:

  • Perform a hard reset on your printer:
    1. Turn the printer off and unplug it from the power source.
    2. Wait for 60 seconds, then plug the printer back in and turn it on.
    3. Reinsert the ink cartridge and check if it's now recognized.

If the problem continues, it might be a hardware issue with the printer, or the cartridge may be defective.

Thank you gaya1239

I did all the above. However, the only way I can print is by removing the black cartridge and printing with only color.

As it happened with a new cartridge, I expect it is a faulty cartridge.

At $42 a cartridge, I hesitate to purchase another to the test.

I appreciate you assistance.
