6x4 gloss paper is loaded but the printer keeps telling me I’ve run out of paper. I’ve put different paper in but still says the same.  Any ideas?

Ideas

If you've not tried it yet,

Restart everything, including your network.

Can't stand it?  Restart the computer and the printer.

No joy?

If you are positive all else is set correctly and checks are complete,

Consider / Try the printer Restart --

  • Leave printer on
  • Unplug printer for two minutes
  • Plug printer in to a standard wall outlet
  • If the printer does not start on its own, press the ON button on the printer to boot

What else?

Printer - Specifications

What if?

The paper is too heavy - see the specifications

Printer Specifications for HP ENVY 5540, DeskJet 5570 Printers

Section Paper Handling > sub-section > Paper tray capacities

The printer is not aware of the paper size / type you have loaded in the tray.

First (re)load the paper according to the instructions in the user manual.

Make sure paper is fed into the tray face down, narrow sides front and back.

Printer - Tray and Paper

EWS > HP Document / How-to

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

NOTE:  Find printer IP address

Section How do I manually assign an IP address to my printer?  Items 1-2

EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management

Open your Browser > Type / enter the Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper (Management)

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

Tray and Paper – Paper Size / Paper Type / Paper Weight

Reminder

HP Smart Mobile requires that paper size / type is adjusted before the content is opened to be printed.

Paper Size, Type, and Weight loaded in the printer tray must be supported for use in that tray.

EWS provides access and control to check / adjust Tray and Paper Settings.

Notes

Depending on the printer model, the Printer Control Panel might provide access to Paper Size / Type settings immediately after the paper is (re)loaded into the appropriate printer intake tray.

Trays

  • If the printer lacks a second tray, all paper / types are supported in the single available tray.
  • Printers that include a Photo Tray generally restrict the paper sizes and paper type supported in that tray.

Custom size?

If EWS does not allow setting the paper size or size “Custom”,

If the printer includes a touch display printer control panel,

Look for the setting for “Custom” in the Printer Control Panel after (re)loading the paper to be used

NOTE:  Not available for all printers

What?

Paper Size, Type, and Weight must be appropriate for the tray in which that paper is to be used.

Printer - Job Settings

What if?

The job configuration settings are incomplete or incorrect.

One thing that can "bite" -- Make the the selected paper size is a match in both size and type.

For example, Select

Media Type = Photo Paper

Paper Size = 4x6 inch

and NOT Index card 4x6 inch

Example - HP Smart - Windows - Simple Photo Print - 4x6 in. - Borderless
