I had trouble clearing a paper jam and as a result I think I broke some parts affecting the paper feed. I can print single sided, but the printer will no longer return the page to the printer to print double-sided. I am trying to figure out if this is something I can repair myself with the right parts. Any advice?

Hi @LarryBB1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry the duplex printing has stopped working after the paper jam—it’s frustrating when a mechanical issue interrupts a feature you rely on. Since single-sided printing still works, the core print mechanism is intact, and we can focus on the duplex path and feeder components.

Let’s walk through what you can check and possibly repair yourself.

What likely happened

The HP OfficeJet 9015e uses an internal duplexer that reverses the page automatically. If the jam affected the rear paper path or duplex rollers, the printer may no longer be able to pull the page back in for the second side.

Try these steps to inspect and restore duplex function:

1. Open the rear access door

This gives you direct access to the duplex path.

  • Power off the printer
  • Open the rear access door or duplex module (if detachable)
  • Inspect for:
    • Loose or misaligned rollers
    • Broken plastic tabs or gears
    • Any remaining paper fragments or debris
  • Clean the rollers with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water
  • Let dry fully before closing

2. Run a duplex cleaning cycle

This helps reset the duplexer logic.

  • Open the HP App
  • Go to Printer Settings > Tools > Clean Paper Feed
  • Run the cycle and then try printing a two-sided document

3. Check duplex settings in software

Sometimes the duplex option gets disabled after a jam.

  • Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers
  • Right-click your printer > Printing Preferences
  • Go to Layout or Finishing tab
  • Ensure Print on Both Sides (Automatic) is selected
  • Apply and print a test document

4. Inspect the duplexer module (if removable)

Some OfficeJet models have a detachable duplexer.

  • Remove the module and inspect for:
    • Broken gear teeth
    • Disconnected springs or levers
    • Warped plastic from forced jam clearing
  • If damaged, this part may be replaceable

Can you repair it yourself?

If the issue is limited to the duplexer module or rear rollers, and no internal sensors are affected, yes, it’s possible to repair or replace the affected part. You’ll need:

  • A replacement duplexer module or rear feed roller kit
  • A soft cloth, tweezers, and patience for reassembly

You can search for parts using your printer’s full model number (e.g., HP OfficeJet 9015e All-in-One) on HP Parts Store or trusted third-party suppliers.

Let me know what you find when inspecting the rear feed area. Once the duplex path is clear and rollers are aligned, your printer should resume smooth two-sided printing.

I am back from my trip and spent about 30 minutes trying to implement your step one. The 9015e does not appear to have a rear access door. The plastic back of the printer is solid with two removable plastic tabs, and the removal of the tabs does not open anything up or appear to accomplish anything. The plastic back of the printer is held in place by at least 4 screws on the back and perhaps more on the bottom, as the plastic back appears to wrap around the bottom. In any event, if there's a door in the back of this printer that can be opened, it's not evident. BTW, I've owned other HP printers with back doors that open.

As for step 2: I am running the HP app on my MacBook, version 20.1.2.35.72. The Printer Settings area on the page does not have a Tools option or any option referring to the paper feed. The Maintenance menu gives you the ability to clean the printhead and a smear but not the paper feed. For step 3: I use a Mac, so, no Control Panel. Whatever my Mac settings, the printer DOES try to print two-sided when I ask for it, but when the printer tries to return the page to be printed on the second side, the printer emits an unfortunate noise and the paper jams. And finally, step 4, there is no removable duplex module.

So ... complete failure on all fronts. Frustrating, as the printer is just barely out of warranty and isn't cheap.

Hawks, at this point I am going to recycle the old printer and get a new one. So, thanks for trying to help, but you shouldn't feel compelled to help further.
