Officejet 5742
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

After inserting the wrong black ink cartridge (52 instead of 62) I get the ''carriage jam'' appearing. . There are no paper issues and have tried all the usual resets etc without success. The colour cartridge is empty but presume it should work without it.

Grateful for any advice.

@Russ_Waite, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to use the printer due to this error.

Kindly use compatible HP ink cartridges.

Perform the steps mentioned in this document - Carriage jam or E3 error

Also, check for any jams inside - Paper Jam Error

Yes, this printer will work with only one ink cartridge installed.

If the error persists, I'm afraid this is a hardware failure. Please reach out to the HP Technical Support team in your region regarding the service/replacement options for your printer.

You may create a case on the website to obtain a case number if required. Kindly watch this video to know how.

Keep me posted for any other assistance.
