HP DeskJet Plus 4140 All-in-One Printer

I have an HP desktop +4140 that is flashing and E3 code saying there is a paper jam, but there is absolutely no paper in it. I have opened up both sides and the bottom and there’s no paper and I don’t know how or what else to do to fix the printer

Hi @CindyLG,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The E3 error on your HP desktop printer typically indicates a paper jam, but if you’ve checked thoroughly and found no paper, it could be due to a few other reasons. Here’s what you can do to troubleshoot.

  • Check the Paper Path: Sometimes small bits of paper or debris can get stuck in the paper path. Check all areas, including the paper trays, rollers, and internal parts where paper feeds through.
  • Inspect Rollers: Ensure the rollers that feed the paper are clean and not damaged. Sometimes dirt or worn rollers can cause feeding issues.
  • Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait a few minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes clear temporary errors.
  • Check for Obstructions: Look for any small obstructions or foreign objects inside the printer that might be causing the sensor to think there is a jam.
  • Check Sensors: If you’re comfortable, gently clean the paper path sensors with a soft, dry cloth. Dust or debris on the sensors can sometimes trigger false error messages.
  • Update Firmware: Ensure your printer’s firmware is up-to-date. Sometimes firmware updates can resolve hardware-related errors.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
