Setting the printer to envelopes all I get is paper jams and envelopes are not formatted for this machine!!

So I cannot print standard sized, as listed in the screen, envelopes even though this is a semi professional machine.

Why list the envelopes if not available?

Why is the printer unable to print envelopes?

Overall I have found the software supplied by HP as incomplete and faulty.

Generally, this printer can print envelopes.

There are some setups to check and not ALL envelopes can be printed.

The following is a collection of ideas and places to check...

What the printer can do:

Printer Specifications for HP OfficeJet Pro 8700 Printers

Section:  Paper Handling > Supported envelopes

Basics

  • If you have not done so, install the Full Feature Software > After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.
  • Load the envelopes according to the instructions in the User Guide - Starting on Page 20 - Pay attention to flap and rotation setup.
  • Tell the printer about the loaded paper / type and set the preferences
  • Create / Print the envelopes

Details

Install the Printer Software

Method - Install the Full Feature Software

,

Download-save-install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver for the printer.

  1. Full Driver / Full Feature Software includes HP Scan
  2. Full Feature Software does not require a sign-in to use the software.

Look for and Install the Full Feature Software from your printer’s support website

Open  Product Home  > Select your printer

Open Category Software and Drivers

NOTE:

Full Feature Software might have been relocated to

Subcategory Software-Utility

Package name might be  Print and Scan Driver and Accessories

  • Download-and-Save the printer software (Full Feature Software)
  • If using USBDisconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

OR

Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software

For printers that support the option,

Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver).

  1. You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.

  1. If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription.  Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.

  1. Full driver provides print and scan functions supported by your printer.

========================================================================

Load Paper

Envelopes must be loaded correctly.

Do check the setup for loading paper in the user guide.

========================================================================

Tell the printer about the loaded paper and set the preferences

Note the reminders

  • If you are using a size not listed in the list, set the printer display panel / EWS Tray and Paper Management settings to size Custom
  • Note that for envelopes, the preferences / default shortcut should be set to "Everyday" printing.
  • Other settings are handled in Word > Mailings > Envelopes

========================================================================

Create the envelope

Examples show standard #10 envelope and the setup for a custom envelope size.

Reminders:

  • Pay attention to location / flap / rotation settings
  • Envelopes have rules about size that go beyond the "supported paper" restrictions.  If an envelope is too small, too narrow, for example, you will see an error (after entering the dimensions) and a suggested (allowed) size will be provided.
  • Envelopes cannot be embossed, cannot be too thick, cannot have jagged edges (on the flap, for example).  Colored envelopes may not print.
  • You CAN add decorations and even a watermark, though not using the standard Word > Mailings > Envelopes method.

THere is no such thing as "Full Feature Software". I have tried to install the software options available and it is worse than before. A full black TEST page after ensuring a good link.

Inconsistent identification of the printer by various software packages.

I am so fed up with the quality of HP

Next, to help with communication issues, change the Port to TCP/IP.

Method - Create TCP IP port

** Install – Optional - Port Issues - Create a TCP/IP port **

TCP/IP can resolve odd connection, scanning, and installation problems.

Create / Switch to a TCP/IP Port to facilitate communication and prevent ‘offline’ issues

How-to “Create TCP Port” Contributed by  greenturtle:

  1. 1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the Front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
    2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, Right-Click the printer and Left-Click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
    3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
    4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:
Create & Use TCP IP port

Note that you can ALWAYS revert back to the original port that the HP software installed by selecting the HP port within the Ports tab (in Printer Properties)

What else?

Try this version of the Doctor:

Offline Doctor

  http://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe

  • Download and Save the doctor to your computer
  • Open File Explorer > Navigate to the folder in which you saved the file (likely Downloads)
  • Execute the doctor – Answer any prompts /  let the process complete
  • Restart the computer, log in, and wait for the final steps in the Doctor to finish.
  • Check for any difference.

Original Notes – Contributed by ShlomiL

Paraphrased

Connection Issues

  • Print and Scan Doctor Version creates a secondary queue for printing with TCP/IP port.
  • Be sure to restart your PC and allow the utility to complete the process, then check for any difference.

  • Try printing and check for any change, if the same remains try printing using the newly added print queue copy (Copy1) and check for any difference.

After the Offline Doctor completes…

Verify / Adjust the “Default” printing device (Default Printer)

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

OR

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers > Right-Click on printer > Set printer as Default

NOTES – When Selecting Default Printer

  1. Do not select the printer marked as “Scan Only / DO NOT DELETE”
  2. Do not select the printer marked as “Fax”

Example Default Printer:  Set “Default” Printer = HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series PCL-3 (Net)

ReferenceHP Printers - Printer is Offline (Windows) > Step 2: Manually set the default printer

For those reading:

Over time, the naming convention of the full driver software has evolved - and in some cases, has always been different across printer types.

The essential character remains the same.

Printer Software = Full Driver / Full Feature Software / Print and Scan Driver and Accessories / Full Solution

Where is Full Feature Software (includes HP Scan)?

  • When / If available, install your printer software using HP Easy Start
    • Home Page - HP Easy Start >> Open Category Software and Drivers > Topic: Software-Utility > Download and save the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
    • When asked, choose to install the Full Driver

OR

  • Open your printer Home Page > Support Website
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Full Feature Software might have been moved to subcategory Software-Utility and / or might now be called  Print and Scan Driver and Accessories
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in
