HP ENVY 5540 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Envy 5540 printer picks up a piece of paper, and moves it forward a little 1-3 cm. Then it stops moving the paper, and after several movements of everything else (photo tray etc.) for a few minutes, it claims that there is a paper jam inside.

I open the paper tray, pull back the top paper, and try again (trust me there is no paper jam inside the machine), and it fails again and again.

If I push the paper forward the moment it has picked up the paper, it feeds alright and the printer actually prints.

WIthout help it fails almost every time, as if it does not know that it must move the paper forward a little more. I dont know if it somehow triggers the sensor that tells it that the paper is in position before it really is.

Please help me with intelligent advice, cause the printer is otherwise great still.

Hi @HenrikTdk,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with your HP Envy 5540 printer could be due to several reasons, including a paper jam, misalignment, or other mechanical issues. To resolve this problem, you can follow these steps.

  • Check for Jammed Paper: The most common cause of paper jams is, of course, jammed paper. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Open all access doors and carefully remove any paper that may be stuck inside. Pay attention to any small bits of paper that might be torn and difficult to see.
  • Clear the Paper Path: Examine the paper path for any obstructions. Use a flashlight if necessary. Make sure there are no loose objects, bits of torn paper, or foreign objects blocking the paper path.
  • Inspect Rollers and Wheels: Dust and debris can accumulate on the rollers and wheels, causing paper feed issues. Clean them using a lint-free cloth moistened with water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Check the Paper Type and Size: Ensure that you are using the correct type and size of paper that the printer supports. Improper paper can lead to feeding problems.
  • Load Paper Properly: Make sure the paper is loaded correctly in the input tray. Adjust the paper guides to align with the paper size.
  • Reset the Printer: Sometimes, resetting the printer can resolve minor issues. Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, and then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers: Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can also cause issues. Check for driver updates on the HP website or reinstall the printer drivers.
  • Check for Firmware Updates: Firmware updates can address known issues. Check the HP website for firmware updates specific to your printer model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
