Will my HP Envy 5660 support using HP Heavyweight Project Paper (40 lb)?

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

So - Maybe it will work.

I can advise some things to add to your checklist.

I cannot tell you whether or not the printer will tolerate the HP Heavyweight Project Paper (40 lb)

The answer depends on

  • The Operating System / version
  • The paper weight and the paper type,
  • The paper size,
  • Whether the printer can be made aware of the paper to the extent that it (the printer) can use the paper in the job configuration - application / software options and settings

What?

Cover paper (an ISO manufacturing paper type) converts differently to gsm than does (for example) Text paper to gsm.

From  QinPrinting  website -

Easy to read and understand – includes conversion tool – explains how paper type impacts gsm rating

Paper Weight Conversion: GSM to LBS

Media Weight Recommended (imperial)18 to 22 lb
Media Weight Recommended (metric)70 to 90 g/m²
Media Weights Supported, By Paper Path (Imperial)16 to 72 lb
Media Weights Supported, By Paper Path (metric)Tray 1: A4: 75 to 90 g/m²; HP envelopes: 75 to 90 g/m²; HP Photo Paper: up to 250 g/m²; HP 10 x 15 cm photo paper: up to 250 g/m²

Next,

The paper size, paper type, and paper weight must all be supported.

The paper type does not have to be an exact match -- but you need to be able to find something that will tell the printer and the job setup application / software that you are using paper that is more than just "Plain Paper".

Next,

Assuming you want to try it, you need to be able to tell the printer about the paper.

"Telling the printer" is in addition to any settings you adjust or select in the application or software you are using to open, view, configure, and submit the job to the printer.

"Tell the printer" about the paper size & type using the printer control panel or EWS.

After the paper is loaded,

Check the Printer Control Panel for a message to adjust the paper size and type.

OR

If the printer is on your network,

If it is supported,

Use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to check / adjust the Paper Size & Type - Tray and paper.

and

EWS > HP Document / How-to

Use the HP printer Embedded Web Server (EWS)

EWS – Browser – Tray and Paper Management

Open your favorite browser > type / enter Printer IP address into URL / Address bar

Tab Settings > Preferences > Tray and Paper Management

Select / Adjust settings for Paper Size / Type

Model Dependent:  Advanced section

Click Apply to save changes

Set the paper type as close as you can find to "card" paper.

For example, "Plain paper, Thick", "Specialty Paper - Matte"

===============================

Comments - FYI only

Envy printers are typically "less robust" than, for example, the OfficeJet Pro series.

For example,

Mentioned in one source for this printer, (but) not included in the specifications document:  "Card" paper:

HP definition of “Card” paper /  “HP Card Paper”

163 to 200 g/m² (card)

90 to 110 lb (card)

“Card” is defined as paper type “Index paper”

This printer does not list (as supported) Brochure / Professional paper (180 gsm).

The printer supports a "lighter weight" photo paper than do some models (Envy or OfficeJet Pro).

Note:  No, you cannot trick the printer by telling it you are using photo paper if you are not, in fact, loading and using photo paper.  Most printers "detect" the difference and complain (issue a conflict error).
