HP DeskJet Plus 4155 All-in-One Printer
macOS 12.0 Monterey

My HP Deskjet 4100  goes through the process of trying to pick up a page 3 times and then shows an error.  When I print a test page, it does it without a problem.  I have done a reset by unplugging for 20 seconds but that did not help.

Please help.

Hi @neda43,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP Deskjet 4100 is having trouble picking up and feeding regular print jobs, even though it can handle test pages. This issue can be frustrating, but there are several things you can try to resolve it:

1. Check Paper Tray and Paper Path:

  • Paper Type and Size: Ensure that the paper in the tray is correctly loaded and matches the type and size settings on the printer.
  • Paper Quality: Use high-quality, clean, and dry paper. Paper that is damp, torn, or wrinkled can cause feeding issues.
  • Paper Tray: Make sure the paper is aligned correctly and that the paper guides are snug but not too tight against the paper.

2. Inspect the Feed Mechanism:

  • Remove Paper: Take out any paper from the tray and check for any jams or obstructions in the paper path.
  • Clean Rollers: The paper feed rollers can accumulate dust and debris over time. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to gently clean the rollers. Allow them to dry completely before reinserting paper.

3. Check for Paper Jams:

  • Internal Inspection: Open all access panels and check for any paper jams or pieces of paper that might be stuck inside the printer.
  • Clear Any Obstructions: If you find any paper or foreign objects, carefully remove them.

4. Check the Print Settings:

  • Print Settings: Ensure that your print settings on your computer are configured correctly. Sometimes incorrect settings can affect how the printer handles jobs.

5. Update or Reinstall Drivers:

  • Driver Update: Outdated or corrupted printer drivers can cause issues. Go to HP’s website, download the latest driver for your Deskjet 4100, and install it.

6. Perform a Printer Calibration:

  • Calibration: Some printers have a calibration option that can be accessed through the printer’s control panel or software. This can help align the rollers and improve feed accuracy.

7. Check for Firmware Updates:

  • Firmware: Sometimes, updating the printer’s firmware can resolve feeding issues. Check HP’s website or use the HP Smart app to see if there’s a firmware update available for your model.

8. Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  • Diagnostic Tool: HP offers a utility called the HP Print and Scan Doctor which can help diagnose and fix issues with HP printers. You can download it from the HP support website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thank you Rachel571.  I tried several of your solutions and I finally got it to print.  One thing that seemed to help was to have more than just a few sheets in the tray.
