I had struggled with a similar, often complained about issue of the HP 7850 not feeding 4 X 6 photo paper into the printer.  I almost gave up until I realized that their was no positive tension feed mechanism (no sort of pusher)  in the paper tray and surmised that the paper size adjustment holder was gripping the paper too snuggly to allow the feed mechanism to withdraw a sheet when the tray was filled.  Sure enough, when I only installed 3 to 4 sheets they rested loosely enough in the holder to be drawn out every time.  (This is still  a pretty messed up design flaw...but a solution that worked for me!)
