HP MFP281 Laser printer
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

Printing from Mac Big Sur Computer, HP printer says load tray 2 ( where my paper is) or press OK...

So I went to the menu and selected tray 2. That didn't help.  I still have to get up press OK then it prints,

It didn't use to do that till I started printing envelopes from the self feed, tray 1, That's when it started.

Now when I try to print 2 sides of the page from the top feed, it says Load tray 2. plain letter. 8.x11 paper is in there, so why?

only option is to hit cancel and i'm in a circle.

Last of all, when I tried to print an envelope the envelope jammed in the self feed, tray 1. It did this twice.

Hd to remove tray 2 and tip the whole machine up to reach underneath to recover the envelope.

Finally I did get it to print the envelopes. Other problem remains

@Burton11, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand you have issues while printing from tray 2. Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:

  • Are you able to print fine from Tray 1?
  • Which application are you trying to print from?
  • Have you tried printing different types of documents like PDF, Word, or Webpages and check if the issue persists?

Update the printer firmware

Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your Mac.

Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.

Also, check for any software updates on Mac

Click the Apple icon > About This Mac > Software Update and install any available update.

Make sure the papers are correctly loaded in tray 2, refer to page 17 of the user guide.

Check the print settings as shown in this document - Print Settings Guide

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

Kumar0307, Thanks for your reply!

Re: your questions:

1.  yes, I can print tray 1, self feed.

2. yes, on PDF, Word Doc and internet, and emails it copies fine, BUT... I get an error (yellow triangular sign) message that says "load paper in tray 1 or use available media."

So I first have to push "OK or cancel".

So I'm walking back and forth to the printer...I also sometimes get a popup on the computer saying the paper size selection in the software is wrong, but it's not. i checked/reviewed all the pages in the manual as instructed.

3. I removed the printer fr sys preferences and then reinstalled. I updated firmware and restarted the computer. I also unplugged everything from the printer. problem persists.

THANK YOU!

Also I discovered that when i select 2 "one sided"copies to be put on 1 "two sided" copy from the printer window, using the top auto feed, it says, " Load paper in tray 2", and at the bottom right, it leaves me the option to "cancel". Those are the only choices it gives, and of course there's already paper in tray 2.

So there isn't a way to copy 2 pages onto one page, front and back, i.e. that function is not working right now.

THANK YOU SO MUCH.

@Burton11, thank you for the response.

Are you using the HP Printer driver or the AirPrint driver to print?

Use the AirPrint option and check if that helps to print as shown in this document - Printing with Apple AirPrint (Mac)

If the issue persists, I think this issue needs some additional technical assistance that can be better provided through one-on-one interaction or a remote session with our HP Support team.
