HP SmartTank 5105

Just wanted to share my experience, sending a printing job from my son's Mac on his HP 5105 which produced all sorts of rattles but no paper was taken, even less so printed, with the blinking orange "!" showing a paper error.

The printer was purchased a few months ago and worked flawlessly until my son updated his OS to 15.3.

A few days later (he prints very rarely and 99% of the time from Libre Office), he attempted to print a LibreOffice document using WIFI and AirPrint. And this is when nothing came out and the orange blinking "!" showed up.

  • I watched some HP "how to" videos around the topic of paper
  • Found out eventually that the printer would pick up paper and print normally when producing a printer's report straight from it - so the rollers / paper intake was not the problem. It had to be an App/OS issue
  • Deleted and re-added the printer on the Mac
  • Checked HP Smart, went through some windows to complete the set up, including allowing auto-updates for the printer
  • Unplugged the printer, (waiting 2-3 minutes) and replugged it.

Finally I was wondering if LibreOffice wasn't the problem. Since the app doesn't alert you when a new update is out you have to think of periodically check it out.

There was indeed a newer version and sure enough, after installing it, printing was no more an issue.

It is unclear which of the above steps (or something else behind the scene) actually solved the problem but wanted to share this anyway.

Update : the "Libre Office" update didn't  hold much :  printing is again not possible (paper not picked up for print). Will need to dig more into this.
