HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g

When opening the HP8600 ADF door there is a green plastic tab on the left: should this tab be locked down or lifted up before returning the ADF door to the closed position. I messed with this because every time I use the ADF I get a paper jam as the paper feeds to the right of the mechanism, and I don't recall if the plastic tab should be locked in a down position or in an up position. Interestingly, in either position the paper jams. Thanks!

Hi @bagivot,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The green plastic tab you mentioned on the left side of the ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) door of the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus serves as a mechanism to engage or disengage the ADF rollers.

When the tab is in the down position, it typically indicates that the ADF rollers are engaged, ready to pick up and feed the paper through the feeder. In this position, the ADF should be able to function properly.

Conversely, when the tab is in the up position, it usually means that the ADF rollers are disengaged, which might be useful for cleaning or troubleshooting purposes.

For normal operation, you should ensure that the tab is in the down position before closing the ADF door. However, since you're experiencing paper jams regardless of the tab's position, it's possible that there might be another issue causing the problem.

Here are a few troubleshooting steps you can try:

  • Check for obstructions: Make sure there are no foreign objects obstructing the paper path inside the ADF. Even small pieces of torn paper or debris can cause jams.
  • Inspect the rollers: Examine the ADF rollers for any signs of damage or wear. Worn rollers may have difficulty picking up the paper properly, leading to jams.
  • Clean the rollers: Use a clean, lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water to gently clean the rollers. Dirty or dusty rollers can also cause feeding issues.
  • Adjust the paper guides: Ensure that the paper guides inside the ADF are set to the correct width for the paper you're using. Misaligned or overly tight paper guides can cause jams.
  • Update printer firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues or bugs that may be contributing to the problem.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks Alden4! I could not find anything in the HP manual about the plastic tab setting. I'll be sure to try your recommendations. Have a great day.
