How does printer determine if there is photo paper in photo paper tray?

Does it use a rubber roller to see if anything moves.  Could this be affected by the paper or humidity? 

I tried for several days to get the thing to work, but no matter what I did, it kept telling me to put photo paper in the photo paper tray,  Then it started working and has been working for 3 days.  Now I'm afraid to turn it off.

Based on your question(s) and description, the source of the problem is perhaps less likely to be software.

That said, Yes, if the problem continues, (then) at some point it consider uninstalling / reinstalling the printer software.
