LaserJet 4250 part fell off. Where does it go?

My 4250 has stopped recognizing that the tray has paper and after I pulled out the tray I found this part underneath.  Where does it go?  Is it related to the tray  issue?

Doesn't look to be from an old LJ 4520 to me, looks too white on the pictures to me.

It might be a stopper for the paper size ( length) guide. 

Remove the tray, remove paper push the blue tab in the back to change paper length and check will it lock after you release the blue tab.

That is one of the locks that secures the backstop after you release the blue lever on the tray backstop referenced in @Valsimot post above. Not uncommon for the backstop to crack on the bottom and then the stop does not lock and it slides around, causing paper size mismatch errors.

Thank you Valsimot.  You are correct. it is from that spot.  On closer inspection it became obvious.  there are 2 of these parts and this one is broken.  new tray or new printer in my future. Thanks again

No need for a new tray, and no need for a new printer. Set the correct paper length and use small screws to fix the sliding part from moving.

There are companies that offer replacement back stops likely cheaper than replacing the tray https://secure.partsmart-corp.com/other-printer-parts/rm1-1089-000-paper-tray-back-stop

Or if you only ever use one size of paper in the tray, use epoxy to fix the backstop in the correct location, we have done that a lot for clients.
