Microsoft Windows 11

My OfficeJet Pro 7740 in the past has printed cardstock without any issues. I LOVE THIS PRINTER. But in the last 2 weeks it jams when I try to print on cardstock.  I have changed the setting to thick and back as at one time it actually printed cardstock better when it was NOT set on thick.  I have tried both settings and it still jams.

Hi @cbaumann

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Cardstock Specifications:

  • Ensure that the cardstock you are using meets the printer's specifications. The recommended weights for HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 might vary, so consult the printer manual for acceptable paper weight and types.

Clean the Paper Path:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the printer and carefully remove any debris or dust from the paper path, rollers, and trays. Use a soft, lint-free cloth.
  • Check for any small pieces of cardstock or paper stuck inside the printer and remove them.

Adjust Paper Settings:

  • In the printer settings on your computer, ensure the paper type is correctly set to cardstock or thick paper.
  • Make sure to adjust the paper size settings to match the size of the cardstock.
  • Sometimes selecting a lighter weight paper setting can help avoid jams when using thicker media.

Use High-Quality Cardstock:

  • Use high-quality cardstock that is less prone to bending or curling. Poor quality cardstock can easily jam and might cause issues in the paper feed.

Load Cardstock Properly:

  • Ensure that the cardstock is loaded properly in the input tray.
  • Do not overload the tray; load a few sheets at a time to see if the printer handles them better.
  • Adjust the paper guides tightly against the cardstock without bending it.

Perform a Printer Reset:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug the power cord.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds then, plug the power cord back in and turn on the printer.
  • Sometimes a reset can help resolve minor issues and allow the printer to handle cardstock better.

Firmware and Driver Updates:

Kindly refer to this link to update your printer firmware.

Paper Feed Settings:

  • Some printers allow adjustments to paper feed settings. Check the printer's control panel or software for any feed adjustments specific to thick media.

I hope this helps.
