On the back of the paper tray there are two vertical pieces that insert into spaces in the paper tray holder. One of the spaces is blocked by a metal piece that I am unavle to  access.

Thank you for your reply. To claify: there are two vertical prongs on the back of the tray. In the space for the tray in the printer there are two slots the the prongs fit in. The left hand slot  has an approximately 3/8" wide metal piece lying horizonally across the slot. I assume that is part of an interlock system. It does prevent the tray from seating all the way in. I can still print evenwithout the tray being fully seated.

Upon looking again there is a plastic piece about 1/8" wide half-way up the space. At a guess I would say that an interlock has broken.
