The solutions for fixing the dreaded "Out of Paper" issue posted on HP simply do not work - PERIOD!  I own an expensive HP Envy 7255e All-in-One Printer which runs under Mac Sequoia 15.2.  I never had a problem with this error message until Apple released Mac Sonoma, which uses its own "Print Center".  I've been told by HP Support that I should report this issue to Apple, which I have done on several occasions; and, wouldn't you know it, Apple advises that I report the issue to HP.  It seems that the folks at HP and Apple should be talking to each other since this is a "common problem" with HP printers (see the numerous Internet complaints!) and Apple's Printer Center - not to mention Apple's obsession with updating its OS every year.  Let me repeat:  NONE of the solutions on HP's support site or forums work.  What's the use of owning an expensive HP Printer if HP can't figure out how to solve the problem.  Hint:  Two other printer companies had the "Out of Paper" issue, but solved the problem!  You can

Hi @MacDoc13 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are getting the "Out of Paper" issue you're experiencing with your HP ENVY Inspire 7255e and macOS Sonoma (or Sequoia 15.2) appears to be a frustrating compatibility issue caused by changes in Apple's printer handling. While neither HP nor Apple seems to have provided a definitive fix yet, here are some troubleshooting and workaround steps that may help:

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Ensure Printer Firmware is Up-to-Date

  • Check if there's a firmware update for your HP printer:
    • On the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
    • Alternatively, visit the HP Support page and search for updates.

2. Use HP Smart App for Printing

  • The HP Smart app often works better than the macOS Print Center for managing HP printers. Download it from the Mac App Store.
  • Use the app to set up the printer and bypass the Print Center.

3. Delete and Reinstall the Printer

  • Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Remove the HP ENVY Inspire 7255e printer.
  • Re-add the printer, ensuring you select the latest driver (if available) instead of "AirPrint" or "Generic PostScript Printer."

4. Adjust Paper Settings

  • Open the HP Smart app or Print Center and confirm the correct paper size and type are selected. Mismatched settings can trigger the "Out of Paper" error.

5. Disable "Print Using AirPrint"

  • During printer setup, avoid the "AirPrint" option. Instead, use a dedicated HP driver. If no such driver is listed, download the latest driver package from HP Drivers for Mac.

6. Reset the Printing System

  • Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  • Right-click (or Control-click) in the Printers list and select Reset printing system.
  • Re-add your printer and test again.

Workarounds

Use an Older macOS Version via a Virtual Machine

  • If the printer worked flawlessly on an older macOS version, consider running a virtual machine (e.g., Parallels or VMware) with that macOS version to print.

Print from a Different Device

  • If you have another non-Apple device, such as a Windows PC or an iPhone/iPad (which often uses HP's proprietary solutions), try printing from there.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Gaya1239,  thank you for your recommendation list.  However, Step 3 does NOT work after installing the latest version of the HP Smart App (that is, version 17.35.1).  After deleting and reinstalling the Printer, there is NO option to by-pass AirPrint.  In fact, the only options are these:  Auto Select; Generic PCL Printer; and, Select Software (which only lists the HP DeskJet Series and HP LaserJet Series PCL 4/5).  Incidentally, the last Firmware update was November 11, 2024; note that when I downloaded it, I was given a message that NO drivers existed for my Printer.  As to the HP Smart App, the last Apple OS listed was Ventura, MacOS13 - which NEVER had any issues until Apple created the Print Center - a total piece of garage which CANNOT be disabled or deleted!  The Print Center has usurped the printer drivers for Brother, Canon, Epson, and HP printers - just check the complaints on the Internet.  Is this a coincidence?  I think not.  As a point of reference, I started using an Apple computer in late 1985 (Apple III Plus), following the use of my Commodore 64 computer in 1982 to write and publish my doctoral dissertation on 54 1K floppy discs!  Over as many years, I have found workarounds for Apple OSs that neither Apple techs or Apple support knew about.  It has only been since the Tim Cook era that the Apple MacOS has become excessively bloated and a "Swiss army knife" to incorporate cross-over drivers for its ever increasing devices and annual updates. Perhaps Apple intends to produce its own Printer since it appears to lack the interest in working with major Printer manufacturers or frustrated Apple users.  Again, thank you for your recommendations and suggestions, although they don't work and join a long list of other ideas posted on various forum and on the Internet.
