Hi @Wiona57

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP printer is showing a "Paper Tray Empty" message even though the tray is full, it's likely due to a sensor issue, paper misalignment, or some other minor glitch. Here are some troubleshooting steps to help resolve this issue:

1. Check Paper Alignment

  • Ensure the paper is loaded correctly in the tray. The paper should be aligned neatly and not overfilled.
  • Make sure the paper is not jammed or stuck in the tray. If there are any obstructions or misaligned paper, it can cause the sensor to think the tray is empty.
  • Adjust the paper guides so that they fit snugly against the edges of the paper. If the guides are too tight or too loose, it could prevent the printer from recognizing the paper correctly.

2. Remove and Reload the Paper

  • Eject the paper tray completely and remove all paper.
  • Inspect the paper for any wrinkled or bent sheets. Sometimes, a single bent sheet can trigger this error.
  • Reload the paper carefully, ensuring it is stacked correctly and that the guides are properly adjusted to the paper's size.

3. Clean the Paper Tray Sensor

  • Your printer has a sensor that detects whether the paper tray is full or empty. Sometimes, dust or ink buildup can interfere with the sensor's operation.
  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Look inside the paper tray area and locate the sensor (often a small optical sensor or switch near the tray). It may look like a small plastic or metal arm.
  • Use a soft cloth or a compressed air canister to gently clean around the sensor area. Be careful not to damage the sensor.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
