Hi @sassenach1,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
When your Envy 5540 printer indicates that you need to fill the paper tray even though it's already full, it might be experiencing a sensor issue or having trouble detecting the paper. Here are several steps you can try to resolve the problem:
Check Paper Type and Quality: Ensure that the paper in the tray matches the type and size settings on your printer. Also, the paper should not be damaged, wrinkled, or too glossy, as this can affect detection.
Clean the Paper Tray: Remove the paper and inspect the tray for any dust or debris that might interfere with the paper detection sensors. Clean the tray thoroughly before reloading the paper.
Adjust the Paper Guides: Make sure the paper guides are snug against the stack of paper but not too tight, as this could prevent the printer from picking up paper properly.
Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, wait about a minute, and then turn it back on. This can sometimes reset the sensor and eliminate the error message.
Firmware Update: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. An outdated firmware can lead to various issues, including paper detection problems. You can find firmware updates on HP's official website by searching for your printer model.
Check for Obstructions: Look inside the paper tray and the paper path for any foreign objects or paper pieces that might block the sensors or the paper path.
Clean the Rollers: Dirty rollers can lead to feeding issues. You can clean them with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water. Make sure to let them dry completely before trying to print again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
