It seems that I can only use thin, cheap photo paper in my printer, HP Envy 5540, anything slightly better quality just jams, or rather, says it has jammed.
The problem then is that I can never have decent photos printed and have nearly 100 sheets of A4 200 gsm photo paper that is of no use to me.
The photo paper does not exactly jam, it runs half way through the rollers and then stops. When I pull the sheet out it is in perfect condition, not ripped or creased.
I hope someone can help me with this problem.

Thank you for your reply, Rachel.
I have, in the meantime, tried using just one sheet of photo paper at a time, and flexing it before putting into the tray. This seems to be working at the moment.
I don't really understand what you mean by 'rear paper tray', but thank you for your help.

Jan

Hi @Jan-Joel,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like your HP Envy 5540 is having trouble handling thicker photo paper. Here are some steps you can take to try to resolve the issue:
1. Check Printer Settings
- Make sure that the paper type is set correctly in your printer settings. Select “Photo Paper” or a similar option in the print dialog box before printing.
2. Use the Correct Tray
- Ensure you are using the correct paper tray for the type of paper you are using. The Envy 5540 typically has a rear paper tray for specialty papers. Make sure the paper is loaded correctly.
3. Adjust Paper Guides
- Adjust the paper width guides in the tray to fit snugly against the edges of the paper. This helps ensure the printer feeds the paper correctly.
4. Avoid Overloading the Tray
- Don’t exceed the recommended number of sheets for the tray. For thicker paper, you may need to reduce the number of sheets loaded at one time.
5. Try Different Paper Types
- Since some thicker papers may be problematic, you might want to try other brands or types of 200 gsm photo paper. Some printers have preferences for specific brands.
6. Check for Rollers and Dust
- Inspect the printer rollers for any dust or debris that could affect feeding. Clean the rollers gently with a lint-free cloth. Make sure they are not worn out, as this can also cause feeding issues.
7. Update Printer Firmware
- Ensure that your printer’s firmware is up to date. Sometimes, updates can resolve compatibility issues with certain paper types.
8. Print a Test Page
- Try printing a test page or a simple document using the thicker paper to see if the problem persists. This helps determine if it’s specific to photo printing.
9. Consider Using a Different Paper Weight
- If possible, you may need to use a lighter weight paper that your printer can handle better.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
