My Photosmart 7520 is not reading that the paper is loaded. I have HP paper, and it is loaded. I have done most trouble shooting. I did just install an ink cartridge, and not sure if that may be related. There was a brief error message mentioning the cartridge. It is an official HP cartridge.

Hi @Cat921,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a couple of potentially related issues with your Photosmart 7520 printer. The fact that the printer isn't recognizing that paper is loaded and there was an error message mentioning the ink cartridge shortly after installing a new one suggests a few possible troubleshooting steps. Here's what you can do:
Check the Paper Tray and Paper Sensor:
- Ensure that the paper is properly loaded in the tray and aligned correctly. Sometimes, even a slight misalignment can cause the printer to not detect the paper.
- Look for any foreign objects or dust that might be blocking the paper sensor or affecting its ability to detect paper. Carefully clean the area around the sensor using a soft, lint-free cloth.
Reinstall the Ink Cartridge:
- Since the issue started occurring after the installation of a new ink cartridge, it's possible that the cartridge might not be installed correctly.
- Open the cartridge access door and carefully remove the newly installed cartridge.
- Check for any plastic protective tape that might still be on the cartridge. If you find any, remove it as it can prevent the cartridge from being recognized by the printer.
- Reinstall the cartridge, making sure it clicks into place and is secured properly.
Reset the Printer:
- Sometimes, a simple reset can clear any errors and restore functionality. To reset your printer, disconnect it from the power source while it's turned on. Wait for about a minute, then reconnect it and turn the printer on.
Check for Firmware Updates:
- Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. HP regularly releases firmware updates that can resolve issues like these. You can check for updates through the HP Smart app or the printer's control panel if it's connected to the internet.
Inspect the Carriage and Cartridge Contacts:
- Turn off the printer and open the cartridge access area. Inspect the contacts on the cartridge and the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge installs for any dirt or debris. Gently clean the contacts with a soft, lint-free cloth moistened with distilled water.
Check the Error Message:
- If there was a specific error message related to the cartridge, it might provide a clue on what is wrong. Check the printer manual or HP’s support website by searching for the error message for more targeted troubleshooting.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
