HP MFP 179 FNW
macOS 12.0 Monterey

Hi, I thought this printer specifically for invites/cards

i cannot get it to recognise 5x7 paper.

the tray doesn’t “shrink” down enough.

i have set the paper size to custom.

ive also set the size on printer settings of the pdf I want to print.

if it can’t do this it’s going back!!

thanks!

@EllaG010, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your HP Laser Jet MFP 179 fnq that is facing print issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand how frustrating it can be when the printer doesn't work as expected, especially when you're trying to print invites and cards. Let’s work through this step-by-step and see if we can get it sorted out:

Check Paper Tray Compatibility:
The HP MFP 179 FNW supports a range of paper sizes, but the tray might have limitations on how small it can adjust. Try loading the 5x7 paper in the center of the tray and adjust the guides to hold it snugly without bending it.

Set the Paper Size in Printer Preferences:

  • Open System PreferencesPrinters & Scanners
  • Select your printer → Options & SuppliesPaper Handling
  • Set the paper size to 5x7 (or Custom if it's not listed)

Set Paper Size in the PDF Settings:

  • Open the PDF in Preview
  • Go to File → Print
  • Select the correct printer
  • Under Paper Size, choose 5x7 or Custom

Check Printer Settings Directly:
Sometimes the printer itself might need to be configured. On the printer’s control panel:

  • Go to Setup → Paper Setup → Custom Size
  • Enter the 5x7 dimensions

Try a Manual Feed (if available):
Some printers handle smaller paper better when fed manually rather than from the main tray.

If none of these steps work, let me know what error message you’re seeing (if any), and we’ll troubleshoot further!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
