@Denise04, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Issues on HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer !

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If you are encountering several error messages and issues like paper jam, printer failure, and cartridge carriage not moving, follow the below steps to troubleshoot and resolve these problems:

Clear a Paper Jam

Input Tray:

  • Remove all paper from the input tray, including loose and jammed paper.
  • Use a flashlight to check for any jammed paper or foreign objects in the paper path and remove them.
  • Gently pull jammed paper with both hands to avoid tearing.

Output Tray:

  • Remove all paper from the output tray, including loose and jammed paper.
  • Use a flashlight to check for any jammed paper or foreign objects in the paper path and remove them.
  • Gently pull jammed paper with both hands to avoid tearing.

Addressing Paper Feed Problems

Paper Not Picked Up from Input Tray:

  • Make sure paper is properly loaded in the input tray.
  • Adjust the paper-width guides to fit snugly against the paper.
  • Ensure paper in the input tray is not curled.

Pages Skewing:

  • Make sure the paper is loaded in the middle of the input tray and the paper-width guides are fitted against both sides of the paper.

Multiple Pages Being Picked Up:

  • Adjust the paper-width guides to fit snugly against the paper.
  • Ensure the input tray is not overloaded with paper.
  • Make sure pieces of loaded paper are not sticking together.

Fix Cartridge Problems

If error messages indicate cartridge issues:

  • Open the ink cartridge access door and check the ink cartridge light to identify the problematic cartridge.
  • Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message and clean the contacts (gold-colored dots) with a dry swab or lint-free cloth.
  • Clean the contacts inside the printer where the cartridge meets.
  • Reinstall the cartridge and close the ink cartridge access door.
  • Verify if the error message is gone; if not, restart the printer.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
