Printer failure code 0x6100004a on 2 identical HP 6968

I have 2 HP 6968 Printers and both have randomly stopped functioning 2 months apart.  The first error message is "jammed paper", then after shutting down using the power button, another error message is "not properly shut down", followed by "printer failure code 0x6100004a.  I tried to trouble shoot the first printer for hours and finally gave up and purchased a new printer.  The 2nd printer now has the same failure mode.  This is ridiculous and perhaps a way to sell more printers.  Does anyone have any solutions/recommendations?

I see this has been a problem since 2018.  Has anyone been able to fix it?  Worked fine for occasional  use printing until  the  day it didn't.
