Hi @Jodi19,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Paper jams in printers can be frustrating, but there are several steps you can take to address the issue. Since your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 is consistently jamming and seems to be grabbing paper from tray 1, here's a troubleshooting guide to help you resolve the problem.

  • Check for Jammed Paper: Carefully open the printer's input and output trays, as well as any accessible doors, to visually inspect for any jammed paper. Even small fragments can cause issues.
  • Remove Paper: Remove all the paper from the input tray. If any paper is stuck, gently pull it out in the direction it would normally feed through the printer.
  • Check Paper Type and Size: Ensure that the paper loaded in tray 1 matches the paper type and size settings in the printer's control panel or print settings on your computer. Mismatched settings can lead to jams.
  • Fan and Align Paper: Before loading paper into the tray, fan the stack to prevent sheets from sticking together. Also, make sure the paper is properly aligned and not curled.
  • Clean Rollers: Over time, the rollers that feed the paper can accumulate dust and debris, causing feeding issues. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with water to gently wipe down the rollers. Do not use alcohol or cleaning solutions that could damage the rollers.
  • Check Tray Guides: Ensure that the paper guides in tray 1 are correctly adjusted to fit the paper size. They should be snug against the paper without bending it.
  • Inspect for Foreign Objects: Look inside the printer, especially around the paper path, for any foreign objects that might be obstructing the paper's path.
  • Update Firmware and Drivers: Make sure your printer's firmware and drivers are up to date. Manufacturers often release updates to address common issues.
  • Use High-Quality Paper: Using low-quality or damaged paper can increase the likelihood of jams. Use fresh, good-quality paper that meets the printer's specifications.
  • Try a Different Tray: If the printer continues to grab paper from tray 1 even when you've selected a different tray for printing, there might be an issue with the paper tray selection settings. Double-check the printer settings on your computer.
  • Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a few minutes, and then plug it back in. This can sometimes clear minor glitches causing the issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
