My HP Envy  5540 printer, K7C85A, ser.# [edit] keeps saying there's a paper jam when there isn't. I've gone through the paper jam removal procedure dozens of times, but the same error message keeps showing. Try all the virtual support suggestion too. Can anyone help/make a suggestion?

Thanks!

Hi @Nonexpert23,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Envy 5540 printer is displaying a paper jam error message, even when there doesn't appear to be any paper jammed, you can try the following troubleshooting steps to resolve the issue.

  • Reset the printer: Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in. Power on the printer and check if the error persists.
  • Check for any visible obstructions: Open the printer's input tray, output tray, and access door (if applicable) to inspect for any pieces of torn paper, foreign objects, or debris that might be causing the jam error. Remove any obstructions carefully.
  • Clear the paper path: Using a flashlight, examine the paper path inside the printer. Look for any small bits of paper that might be stuck or remnants of torn paper. Gently remove any fragments using your hands or tweezers. Be cautious not to damage any printer components.
  • Ensure proper paper alignment: Make sure that the paper stack in the input tray is aligned properly and not exceeding the recommended paper capacity. Adjust the paper guides so that they snugly hold the paper in place without bending it.
  • Clean the paper rollers: Over time, paper dust and debris can accumulate on the rollers, leading to paper jams. Clean the paper rollers using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with water or isopropyl alcohol. Gently wipe the rollers to remove any residue. Allow them to dry completely before using the printer again.
  • Update printer firmware: Visit the official HP support website and check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer model. If so, download and install the latest firmware following the provided instructions. Updated firmware can often resolve various issues, including false paper jam errors.
  • Perform a printer reset: On the printer's control panel, navigate to the "Setup" or "Tools" menu. Look for a "Restore Factory Defaults" or "Reset All Settings" option and select it. Confirm the reset and wait for the printer to restart. Check if the paper jam error persists.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
