My labels do not line up correctly when printed.  I talked with a tech from Avery and she told me the problem is that usually the speed of the feed is the problem.  To get the labels to print correctly, I need to set the printer for "card stock or labels" so that it will feed slower.  I have no idea if or how I could do this.   The labels I am doing are each different,  not  all the same, so I'm super careful to get them centered correctly when I type in the information.  The print is always too high on the labels.  The Avery labels are too expensive to keep trying to print only to not be able to use them.  If you know how to change the type of paper on which the printing goes, please let me know how to do this. Oh, I am still using Avery's Design Pro 4 version that I have on my computer.  It is not as complicated as the one online and I can save it to my computer.  I don't like the idea of saving things on the Avery site..  Thanks.

Yes, the key is likely the paper type.

I have the Design software - snagged it and kept if after it disappeared from the download - Nice.

The following solution depends on you having installed the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software.

The full driver printer software gives you access to the full range of the printer features, including Preferences / Shortcuts and media (paper type) choices that the printer supports.

https://www.avery.com/templates/8160

If you have not done so, consider Exporting the template contents to PDF format.

"Save to PDF"

The option is located after you choose to print / save from the main menu (designing view)

and before you click "Print"

Found an old sample...

Once you have the file saved in PDF format,

Consider using Adobe Reader DC  to print.

Example - Template 5160 (compatible)

Open in Adobe Reader DC  > Click Print icon

Adjust the settings in the main print menu

Click to open Properties

Select Shortcut = "Everyday Printing"  (wording varies_

Set the Paper size to "Letter"

Set the Media / paper type to Brochure Matte, Thick, or similar (NOT photo paper)

Click OK to save changes and exit the Properties / Shortcut menu

Back on the main print menu, when ready, Click Print

Suggestions:

Test on plain paper

Test at Actual Size

Hold up the printed plain paper results to your label paper to judge the alignment.

NOTE:

My experience  >>> Most Avery labels will print using the paper type "Brochure".

The only time I've had any balking was printing a particular type of duplex business cards - I don't remember how heavy they were; printing these did add a bit of stress to the printer that I had at the time (might have been my old OfficeJet Pro 8630)...

The full driver provides the foundation on which other programs and printing software depend.

Printer Software - Preparation

If you have not done so,

In addition to the HP Smart application,

Install the Full Feature Software / full driver printer software for the printer.

HP Smart and other print software / applications benefit from having the full driver installed.

Printer Software Check

Notes

If the full driver printer software is installed, you will see the printer listed in Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features.

The installation of the printer software adds two shortcut icons to the Desktop.

The Printer Assistant is named for the printer and provides access to Print , Scan , and Tools

HP Scan is named for itself and provides a direct call to the HP Scan software.

Printer software not installed?

Method - Use the Easy Start Wrapper to Install the Full Feature / Full Driver Software

For printers that support the option,

Use the Easy Start wrapper to install and configure the printer software.

  • Home Page - HP Easy Start
  • Open Category Software and Drivers
  • Topic: Software-Utility
  • Download-and-Save  the current version of the Easy Start wrapper to install your print software
  • If using USB:  Disconnect the USB cable between the printer and computer before installing the software.
  • Right-Click on the downloaded package and "Run as Administrator" to start the installation
  • When asked, Select to install the “Full Driver” / “Full Feature Software”
  • If using USB:  Connect the cable when instructed to do so (near the end of the installation process).
  • After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in.

Notes >> Easy Start... The Journey

  1. Full Administrator Rights are required to complete the HP Software installation.
  2. About 2/3 of the way through the setup, you will be given the opportunity to select the software - select the "Full Driver" set (as opposed to the basic driver or other application).
  3. You can skip / ignore suggestion(s) that you add the HP Account – you’ll need the account at some point, for now, you can skip this suggestion (as many times as it insists it’s a good idea) during the full driver software installation.
  4. If you see it, you can skip / ignore suggestion(s) regarding Instant Ink subscription.  Instant Ink subscription is NOT mandatory.
  5. Disconnect from Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection while installing printer software.
  6. Full driver includes print and scan functions supported by your printer and provides the printer features on which other applications / software might depend.
