Printed some pages just fine, I inserted a glossy photo paper and print came out unexpectedly bad with part of the image missing so I printed on a plain paper and it came out fine. I entered another glossy paper and again, unexpected results. I tried printing on a plain piece of paper and it jammed again. It says that the jam is at the back. I opened the back and was able to get 3/4 of the page but the rest is inside the machine, there are ZERO instructions anywhere on how to remove the rest of the paper and as luck would have it my warranty conveniently expired at the end of April.

Troubleshooting tells you to avoid tearing the paper but the paper was already partly torn, so if the paper tears then what? Their troubleshooting guide should tell you what to do under all circumstance. Obviously they know that the paper tends to tear or else they would not put that warning so when it does tear, what should one then do??????

Hi @badbanterer,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating dealing with a paper jam in your HP MFP M282-M285 printer. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to safely remove the torn sheet of paper from the rear door:

Steps to Remove Torn Paper from Rear Door:

Turn off the Printer:

  • Ensure the printer is turned off to prevent any damage or injury during the removal process.

Open the Rear Door:

  • Locate and open the rear door of the printer. This door is typically designed to provide access to clear paper jams.

Gently Pull the Paper:

  • Carefully grasp the torn paper with both hands. If the paper is torn, try to gently pull the visible part of the paper straight out, avoiding any sudden or forceful movements that could further tear the paper.

Avoid Tearing the Paper Further:

  • If the torn paper seems stuck or wedged, avoid pulling forcibly. Instead, try to gently wiggle the paper back and forth while pulling it out to release it from the printer’s rollers.

Check for Remaining Paper:

  • After removing the torn paper, inspect the printer’s interior, especially around the rollers and paper path, for any remaining bits of paper or debris. Use a flashlight if needed to get a clear view.

Close the Rear Door:

  • Once all torn paper has been successfully removed and the interior is clear, close the rear door securely.

Turn the Printer Back On:

  • Plug the printer back into the power source and turn it on.
  • Perform a test print on plain paper to ensure that the printer is functioning correctly without any residual issues from the paper jam.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Hello Rachel,

Thanks for responding. There was very little paper available for me to try to grasp and remove. I cannot even see the paper now but I know that I did not get rid of it all. So how can I open this up to get to the part of the paper that I cannot see? Paper jams come part and parcel with printers, how is it possible to release a machine that clearly has paper jam issues without more comprehensive instructions on how to adequately remove all paper jams?

I don't want to be relegated to writing to a forum and hoping someone answers me someday. How can I buy a service manual for this unit since it is now out of warranty?

Thanks,
Jorge

Your best option is to find a video on You Tube on how to remove the fuser. That is typically the only way to remove some paper jams from this engine design.

Hello Repairatrooper,

I only found this video which sounds like it is in portuguese. Thing is that I don't see/know the paper path during his disassembly. Can you take a look at it and maybe give me a time in the video where I would be able to spot the offending sheet fragment?

Do these companies simply no longer make service manuals available to the public? Their anemic sub-minute long videos only serve to satisfy the most basic troubleshooting needs.

Thanks,

Jorge

This video may help more. The basic design of the 477 and the 283 is very similar. Most likely the jam is going to be wrapped one of the fuser rollers and might be hard to see if the jam has been there for a while it will be covered with toner and blend in.

Hi,

The jam should be very obvious since ever since the jam, the printer has refused to properly start up. The jam was the last thing the printer has ever done.

I simply need to know how to get in there. Does the video I referenced provide enough information for a rookie who is good with tools to take it apart to a point where I can identify this fuser and see the paper rolled up around it?

Thanks,
Jorge

Sorry, when you said, "this video may help more" was there supposed to be a video link in your message? If there is a video link in the message, I do not see it.

Thanks.

Which is the video that may help me more?

Not exactly the same but close enough that you should be able to extrapolate. Not sure what happened the first time I posted it.
