Replacing ink toner on HP Laserjet Pro 3101sdw. Opened top of computer. Printer roller bar fell down from its slot. Can't fit it back. No apparent damage to either the ends of the bar. Bad design? Any help out there? Thanks.

Hi @Frankconfused,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a dislodged transfer roller or pickup/roller bar while replacing the toner on your HP LaserJet Pro 3101sdw. While it's uncommon for the roller to fall out, here’s what you can do to try and reseat it properly:
Step-by-Step: Reseating the Roller
- Power Off & Unplug
Always ensure the printer is turned off and unplugged to avoid any electrical risk or further mechanical movement.
- Remove the Toner Cartridge
Gently remove the toner cartridge to get a clear view of the roller track and slots.
- Identify the Roller’s Orientation
- The roller should have two round ends that sit in plastic or metal notches inside the printer frame.
- One side may have a gear or notch for rotation – note its direction.
- Align & Gently Reinsert
- Holding the roller level, align both ends with their respective slots.
- Insert one side first, then gently press the other side into place.
- You should feel a soft “click” or resistance as it seats correctly.
- Check for Free Movement
Lightly roll it with your finger – it should spin smoothly but not wobble.
- Reinsert the Toner Cartridge
Carefully reinstall the toner cartridge, ensuring no part interferes with the roller.
- Close the Lid & Test
Plug the printer back in, power it on, and run a test print.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
