Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

HP inkjet 8020e PCL-3   When I put in specialty brochure paper or card stock it will not print and I get this message: 

Maker sure paper is loaded and is below paper tray stack tab or line shown on tray.  Have not had trouble until about a month ago and I bought this printer in February of 2021.  Can you help as I like to make bookmarks and use card stock and brochure paper.  Thank you, Jan

If the specialty paper has always worked but no longer works,

Consider > Printer might need maintenance (a good cleaning).

Part of this service is to Reset the printer as described in the document.

What else?

It is possible that - along with the maintenance - that completely removing the tray(s) from the printer and then putting the tray(s) back into the printer might help.



After you change the paper / reload the paper / reload the Trays,

Alert the printer to the Paper Size & Type - Tray and Paper Management

Example - Retain / Modify (Edit) / Check Paper Size & Type - Tray and Paper Management




Less likely but worth checking

Make sure the paper settings are still correct in the printer software / Printing Preferences


Set the Preferences – Windows



  • This section is not applicable to Mobile Printing.
  • Access to the complete Printer Preferences requires having installed the Full Driver printer software.
  • The printer should be selected as the default and current printing device.
  • Printing Preferences are available directly from the driver. 
  • Printing Envelopes?  See NOTE


Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on your printer > Printing Preferences


  • When called from within printing software / applications, Printing Preferences might be called "Printer Properties" / "Shortcuts" / “More Settings” / “Properties” / "Printer Setup" or similar.


NOTE >> Word > Mailings > Envelopes  :: Preferences and Envelopes 

Select / leave Printing Preferences Shortcut to "Everyday Printing" or something equally benign.

Preparation > Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”


Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

Also worth trying


Uninstall the full driver printer software from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

Restart the computer

Install a fresh copy of the full driver printer software
