There's a piece of clear plastic on the flatbed area where the scanner scans the documents sent through the ADF. What purpose does it serve? Why shouldn't I remove it? It just doesn't feel right, and sometimes things fed through the ADF come out slightly slanted.

That plastic ensures that the paper feed properly. Without it the leading edge of the paper will jam on the edge of the glass.
