Does the computer have a backlit keyboard?
Some computers do include this feature - many models do not include a backlit keyboard.
In general, I do not believe the version of Windows impacts whether the keyboard back light works.
Honestly, though, that is a guess - I do not use and have never used "S mode Windows".
It is true that "S mode Windows" does not support installing software beyond the applications available in the Microsoft Store
Find whether your computer includes a backlit keyboard:
Open the computer HomePage
Select Category > Manuals
Open the User Guide
The layout information is usually in the first chapter (or maybe chapter 2) - look for the keyboard illustration and the information that explains "hot keys" (for example).
On consumer models, the F5 key might be the "backlit" keyboard control.
If the key that controls the backlit feature is blank - and there are no other keys that control this option, your computer does not have a backlit keyboard.

Reminder, this is a One-Way-Ticket: Once you leave “S” mode, you cannot go back to “S” mode.
