Hi @Bob1629,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're having trouble closing the paper tray on your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer, here are a few steps to troubleshoot the issue.
Check for Obstructions:
- Ensure that no paper, foreign objects, or debris are blocking the tray from fully closing. Remove the paper from the tray and inspect inside the tray compartment for anything that might be obstructing it.
Proper Paper Alignment:
- Make sure the paper is properly aligned and not overfilled. The paper stack should not exceed the maximum fill line.
- If using multiple sizes of paper, ensure that they are set correctly in the guides.
Adjust the Paper Guides:
- Check that the paper width and length guides are set correctly. If the guides are too tight or too loose, they might prevent the tray from closing properly.
- Adjust them so that they snugly align with the edges of the paper without bending it.
Check Tray Mechanism:
- Examine the tray mechanism itself to ensure there are no broken or dislodged parts. Sometimes, plastic parts or levers may be misaligned or stuck.
Gently Push the Tray:
- After ensuring the tray is properly loaded, push the tray in gently but firmly. Avoid using excessive force, as this could cause further damage.
Printer Reset:
- Power off the printer, unplug it for about a minute, and then plug it back in. After the printer restarts, check if the tray closes correctly.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Likely the tray is set in legal mode. Refer to chapter 2 of the user guide here http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04426138.pdf
