printer can't find paper.  I've tried various levels of paper and different kinds of paper.  It tries and tries and then fails.  It says to load paper each time.

The way it is supposed to work is explained in the  User Guide

Pages 23-38

Heed the reminder: Tray 1 supports only plain paper in A4, Letter, or Legal size

Tray 2 is your "custom paper size / type tray" in this printer.

Right after the paper is loaded, close the Tray and modify / retain the paper settings on the Printer Display panel.  If the printer is on the network, use the Embedded Web Server (EWS) to view / adjust the paper settings.  Assuming the Full Feature Software (full driver printer software) is installed, set the Printing Preferences.

What else?

If the printer cannot detect any properly loaded paper, it might be a sensor mishap.

A couple of things to try:

Remove all the paper from both trays, remove the trays.

Peer inside the paper path to make sure there is not a sheet of paper stuck in the back of the path that leads to the inside of the printer.

Replace the correct type / size of paper into each tray,

Close the Trays,

Modify (edit) / Retain the paper size / type settings, Click OK

Try a Printer Reset as described in the Windows section, Step 2:

 Paper Mismatch error (Windows, Mac)
