HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

HP OfficeJet Pro 6978, printer failure, repeatedly says paper jam or out of paper or paper tray not installed properly.  I have tried the suggestions I've seen in the forum, with no success.

Hi @Don-Barberton

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are experiencing issues with your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer. Paper jams and paper feed issues can be frustrating, but there are a few steps you can take to try to resolve them:

  • Check for Jammed Paper: Open all the access doors and trays of the printer and visually inspect for any small pieces of torn paper or debris that may be causing the jam. Make sure to check the entire paper path, including the input tray, output tray, and the rear access door.
  • Clear Any Paper Obstructions: If you find any jammed paper, gently remove it by pulling it in the direction of the paper path. Be careful not to tear the paper, as any remaining shreds could cause additional jams.
  • Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 1-2 minutes. Then, plug the printer back in and turn it on. Sometimes, a simple reset can clear out temporary issues.
  • Check Paper Type and Quality: Ensure that you are using the correct type and size of paper recommended for your printer. Low-quality or damp paper can cause feeding problems.
  • Adjust Paper Guides: Make sure that the paper guides in the input tray are adjusted properly to fit the size of the paper you are using. If they are too tight, it may cause the paper to jam.
  • Clean the Rollers: Dust and debris can accumulate on the rollers over time, leading to feed problems. Use a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water to clean the rollers. Avoid using alcohol or other harsh chemicals.
  • Update Printer Firmware: Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer on the HP website. Sometimes, updating the firmware can resolve compatibility issues and improve printer performance.

As it turns out, it was determined that the printer was not salvageable.  I'm getting a new one.  Thanks for your reply.
