printer will spit out one page then shows the 'paper tray empty' message. Paper tray is not empty. There are no paper jams either

Let us try these steps to resolve this issue:
Reset the printer
Note: HP recommends connecting the printer directly to a wall outlet rather than a surge protector or a power strip.
Update the printer firmware
Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your MAC.
Click here to know different methods of updating printer firmware.
Make sure the papers are correctly loaded in the input tray - Loading Paper, Cards, Envelopes
Try printing. If the issue persists, perform the steps from - An 'Out of Paper' error displays, printer does not pick paper
