problem with printer or print system...screen said t turn it off and then on (printer wouldn't shut off, so unplugged it after 10 minutes and then turned it on.. but no diff... earlier message said paper jam, but there is no paper jam...

I understand you are not able to print due to this error. Kindly perform the steps mentioned in this document - An 'Ink System Failure' or 'System Supply Problem' Error Displays

You may also try the steps here - Printhead errors

Make sure you are using HP ink cartridges. Insert one ink cartridge at a time and check for the error.

Use the old ink cartridges and check if the error persists.

 

If the error persists, I'm afraid the issue is with the printhead. The printhead is non-removable.

If the printer is out of warranty, I suggest you upgrade the printer. You may visit Hp Store to check the available printers.
