Hi @Les3591,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your HP OfficeJet 4500 printer is having trouble detecting the paper in the tray. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check Paper Alignment: Ensure the paper is properly aligned in the tray. Sometimes paper can shift slightly, causing the printer to think the tray is empty.
  • Clean the Paper Sensors: Dust or debris on the paper sensors can cause detection issues. Use a soft, dry cloth to gently clean the sensors inside the paper tray area.
  • Check for Paper Jams: Inspect the paper path for any paper jams or obstructions that might be preventing proper paper feeding.
  • Adjust Paper Settings: Verify that the paper size and type settings in the printer’s settings menu match the paper you’re using.
  • Reload Paper: Remove and reload the paper in the tray. Ensure the paper is not curled or bent and is properly stacked.
  • Reset the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, wait for a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  • Update Printer Drivers: Ensure your printer drivers are up-to-date. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
