HP laser printer. Need to align print heads

Hi there @Alh11, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

If you're using an HP Laser printer and are seeing a message or feel the need to "align print heads," it's important to clarify that laser printers do not use inkjet-style print heads. Instead, they use a toner cartridge and imaging drum, which do not require alignment.

However, if you're experiencing print quality issues such as misaligned text, ghosting, faded prints, or streaks, here are the steps you can take to resolve them:

Run a Cleaning Page

This helps remove toner buildup and improve clarity.

  • On most HP LaserJet models, press and hold the Cancel and Wireless buttons together for 3 seconds to print a cleaning page.
  • Alternatively, use the HP Smart app:
    • Open the app > Select your printer > Settings > Tools > Clean Page Smears.

Check Toner Cartridge

  • Ensure the toner cartridge is properly installed.
  • If the print is faded or uneven, consider replacing the toner.

Use HP Smart Diagnostics

  • Download or open the HP Smart app. HP Smart
  • Go to Support > Printer Diagnostics > Run Optimize Print Quality.

Check Paper Type and Quality

  • Use recommended paper for laser printers.
  • Avoid damp, curled, or incompatible paper types.

Update Firmware

If the suggestions helped solve the problem, please let us know by clicking “Accepted Solution.” It really helps fellow users find quick answers.

A quick “Yes” also goes a long way in showing appreciation!

Take care and happy computing!
